The First Computer Virus Was Just a Prank!
๐ฆ The First Computer Virus Was Just a Prank!
Long before today’s dangerous ransomware and malware attacks, the very first computer virus was created as a simple experiment — and it was more playful than harmful.
In 1971, a programmer named Bob Thomas developed a small self-replicating program called “Creeper”. It was designed for the TENEX operating system used on mainframe computers connected via ARPANET — the early version of the internet.
๐งช What did Creeper do?
It didn’t steal data or crash systems. It simply displayed a funny message on the screen:
๐ฌ “I’m the creeper, catch me if you can!”
The Creeper virus would move from one computer to another, leaving this message behind — making it the first known example of a computer virus.
๐จ๐ป To counter it, another programmer, Ray Tomlinson (yes, the inventor of email), created the first antivirus program called “Reaper” — which chased Creeper across the network and deleted it.
๐ง Why is this important today?
What began as a harmless experiment in 1971 laid the foundation for modern cybersecurity. Today, viruses are much more dangerous — capable of stealing data, damaging systems, and affecting millions globally.
