The First Email Changed the World – And It Started in 1971
π§ The First Email Changed the World – And It Started in 1971!
Today, we send billions of emails every single day. But did you know the very first email was sent over 50 years ago — in 1971?
π¨π» It was sent by Ray Tomlinson, a computer engineer working on a project for the U.S. government’s ARPANET (the early version of the internet). At that time, computers could only send messages to users on the same machine — there was no concept of messaging between different systems.
To solve this, Tomlinson created a method to send messages between two computers, using ARPANET.
π‘ Why the “@” Symbol?
To separate the user name from the computer (or domain) name, he chose the “@” symbol — something rarely used in computing but widely available on keyboards.
His idea:
user@host
That tiny decision shaped how we use email addresses even today.
π¨ What did the first email say?
Interestingly, the content wasn’t dramatic — just some test text like “QWERTYUIOP” — but the real achievement was the technology behind it. It was the birth of modern digital communication.
π From a Single Email to a Global Revolution:
-
1971: First email sent
-
1990s: Email becomes common for businesses
-
Today: It's a critical tool for work, school, marketing, security alerts, and more!
π Why It Matters:
Email opened the door to a connected digital world — but it also brought along new threats like phishing, spam, and cyberattacks.
